How Much Ashes Do You Need for Memorial Jewelry?
This is one of the most common questions we receive — and one of the most reassuring answers we get to give. The amount of cremation ash needed for a memorial ring is very small. Far less than most people expect.
The Short Answer
Most memorial rings at WildBeard Legacy Co require less than a teaspoon of cremation ash — often as little as a quarter teaspoon or less, depending on the ring design and channel size. For reference, a standard cremation produces between 3 and 9 pounds of ash. The amount used in a ring is a tiny fraction of the total.
Exact Amounts by Ring Type
- Single inlay channel ring: Approximately ¼ to ½ teaspoon
- Wide band with large inlay: Up to 1 teaspoon
- Multiple rings from the same cremation: Easily possible — a single cremation provides enough ash for many rings
- Ash combined with other materials (wood, antler, fur): Even less ash needed, as the channel is shared with other inlay materials
Can Multiple Rings Be Made From One Cremation?
Yes — easily. Because so little ash is required per ring, a single cremation provides enough material for many memorial pieces. Families often commission multiple rings — one for each family member — from a single cremation. There will be ash remaining for other memorial purposes regardless of how many rings are made.
What If I Only Have a Small Amount of Ash?
Even a very small amount of ash — a pinch, a fraction of a teaspoon — is enough for a memorial ring. If you're concerned about the amount you have available, contact us during your consultation and we'll confirm whether it's sufficient for your chosen design.
How to Send Your Ashes Safely
We provide detailed packaging and shipping instructions during the consultation process. The key points:
- Use a small, sealable container — a zip-lock bag inside a small jar works well
- Label the container clearly with your name and order information
- Pack the container securely inside a padded envelope or small box
- Ship with tracking — we recommend USPS Priority Mail for domestic shipments
- We confirm receipt as soon as your ashes arrive
What Happens to Unused Ashes?
Any ash not used in your ring is returned to you securely packaged along with your finished ring. We never discard memorial materials. Every gram is accounted for from the moment your ashes arrive until they leave our studio — either sealed inside your ring or returned to you.
Can Pet Ashes Be Used?
Yes. Pet cremation ashes are used in exactly the same way as human ashes. The amount needed is identical. Pet ashes may vary slightly in texture and color from human ashes, but the process and result are the same.
