Can Memorial Rings Be Resized?

The honest answer: it depends on the material. Some memorial ring materials can be resized; most cannot. Here's the breakdown by material — and what to do to make sure you get the right size the first time.

By Material

• Tungsten carbide: Cannot be resized. Tungsten is too hard to cut or stretch. If your size changes, the ring must be replaced.
• Black ceramic: Cannot be resized. Ceramic is brittle and cannot be worked after firing.
• Carbon fiber: Cannot be resized.
• Titanium: Difficult to resize. Some jewelers can resize titanium rings by a half size in either direction, but it's not always possible and depends on the ring design.
• Damascus steel: Sometimes possible, depending on the design and the specific ring. Discuss during your consultation.
• Sterling silver: Can often be resized by a skilled jeweler. Silver is workable and can be sized up or down within a reasonable range. Rings with inlays may be more complex to resize.

Why Most Memorial Rings Can't Be Resized

The materials most commonly used in men's memorial rings — tungsten, ceramic, carbon fiber — are chosen for their hardness and durability. That hardness is also what makes them impossible to resize. The same property that makes a tungsten ring virtually scratch-proof makes it impossible to cut or stretch.

How to Get Your Size Right

• Measure in warm conditions — fingers shrink in cold
• If you're between sizes, size up
• For wider bands (8mm+), consider sizing up half a size for comfort
